Change to the summer version

History

Initially Goldeck’s cable railway was only designated for summer operation. The first section from the valley to the central station was opened at July 10th, 1960 by the former federal president Dr. Adolf Schärf and governor Wedenig. One month later, at the 13th of August 1960, the second section from the central to the mountain station was brought into service.

Facts & Myths

The name “Goldeck” is connected to the scarce regional sources of gold, that was mined in the 16th and 17th century and also shortly in the 18th and 19th century in the Goldeck group – mainly in the area “Stifliz-Guginock”. The Goldeck group was back then one of the most important historic gold mining areas of central Europe. But it is not just facts documenting the origin of the name Goldeck, also numerous legends tell where the name could come from. Mythology reports of really big veins of gold, which people were seeking in former centuries. The probably most famous legend is about Katharina from Salamanca, better known as Countess Salamanca, who immured all her belongings into the ruins of the “Ortenburg” and the Castle “Porcia” and killed all accessories afterwards.
